Why "Athar"?
The story of a name, and of a simple question that became an app eight years later.
On that day I published a simple post asking: how do you track your spending? How do you save? And what keeps you going?
Thirty interviews, eight years
I sat down with around thirty of you. Some may have forgotten we ever spoke. I never did. Every word from those conversations stayed with me for eight years.
Since that day the idea has burned quietly in me. I met what anyone building something from nothing meets. I procrastinated, and I'll admit that first. Resources were scarce, funding never came, and a job swallowed the hours. Years passed while I carried the dream and told myself: "this is the year."
Why the name "Athar"?
Athar is Arabic for trace. Because every coin that passes through your hands leaves one: either in something you built, or in something gone that nobody can account for.
﴾وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا وَآثَارَهُمْ﴿
"We record what they have sent ahead and the traces they leave behind" — Qur'an, Ya-Sin 36:12
We leave a trace in everything we touch, our money included. Athar makes the trace of your money written and visible.
The longest verse in the Qur'an is not about prayer
Nor about fasting. It is about debt:
﴾يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا تَدَايَنتُم بِدَيْنٍ إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى فَاكْتُبُوهُ﴿
"O you who believe, when you contract a debt for a fixed term, write it down" — Qur'an, Al-Baqarah 2:282
We were commanded to write it down. And the Prophet ﷺ said: "The soul of the believer remains attached to their debt until it is settled."
We all have money owed to us and debts we owe, and most of it lives only in memory. If something happened to you tomorrow, who would know? Who would settle what you owe, and claim what belongs to your children?
That is why debts in Athar are recorded with names and dates. And what's coming is better still: soon you'll be able to share your debt ledger with those closest to you as a sealed trust, opened only when it must be. It's a will before it's a feature.
